Synopsis:

Central City, book 2 With Panthera Laboratories running again The Vampire Guard has no choice but to return to Central City. Pretending to be lovers Hunter and Alice are sent in to do reconnaissance. But pretending to be something they both wish was real proves harder than they expect. All logical thought tells Alice there’s no reason to mix business with pleasure unless you’re looking for a problem. Like every other girl who notices Hunter, she fantasizes about him. But becoming a member of his haram is not one of her life goals, neither is being forced to return to a life on the street. If there’s one sure-fire way of jeopardizing her career with The Guard and losing everything she’s worked so hard to attain, it’s by sleeping with her partner. The only problem is she can’t get her heart to believe logic or reason. What is happening to Hunter? Is he losing his touch—his vampire touch? In all his years Hunter has never encountered anyone who could resist his vampire influence. Not until Alice. She’s also the only human to ever best him in a sparring match, but that was beginners luck and had nothing to do with the fact that he couldn’t stop thinking of how he wished she would see him as more than just a partner at work. No woman has ever awakened these feelings and no woman has ever denied him. He’ll do anything to persuade her to be his partner for life, love and eternity.

Excerpt

Soft, Hunter’s lips were very soft. He tasted like strawberries. Seeing as he was drinking a froufrou milk shake, that made sense.
His breathing quickened. Finally Alice had turned the tables and caught him off guard. Her lips brushed his as she spoke. “Hows your heart beating now, lover?”
Hers raced like a runaway stallions. She had thought about kissing him more times than she would ever be willing to admit.
He swallowed. “Fine. It’s just fine.” His voice was huskier than seconds ago.
She glanced down to find the muscles of his chest tensed. His shoulders and biceps bulged as he gripped the edges of the table.
Alice had seen Hunter with no shirt several times before. Hed taken to sparring with her shirtless, which was nothing if not distracting. Shed seen his muscles flex, and she loved the way they moved so beautifully when he fought. He was absolute perfection when in battle.
But still she wondered how his muscles looked right now. Were they hard because of her or had he sensed something around them she hadnt noticed?
Good.” She pressed kisses from one side of his mouth to the other and over to his ear.
For a split second she looked past him. Nothing out of the ordinary spiked her interest. Of course, shed be hard pressed to find anything in the world that could interest her more than Hunter.
Her body heated, burning in places she wished Hunter would touch. But this was work. This was her way of upending him. She would not let herself stumble.
“Lets get something straight,” she whispered in the breathiest voice she could muster. “Im never going to fall for your vampire bullshit.”
She kissed her way back around to his face. His perfectly smooth skin smelled so good. He wasnt wearing cologne. It was just his scent, musky and clean with a hint of soap.
 “Not bullshit. Safety fir—”
Partners don’t play games with each other.” She felt his quickened breath on her face and had to try harder to focus on her next move.
Its now or never, kid. Take him by surprise or know hes always going to win.
Alice couldnt let him win. She couldnt let him get the upper hand when shed stepped, rather leaped headfirst without a thought of how this might go into uncharted territory. She had to get the last word on this.
Hunter licked his lips. “I was just trying to—”
His explanation, one that Alice was certain was a lie because she knew him well enough to know he couldnt stand the idea of being unable to control her, was cut off when Alice ran her tongue along his jawline, up to his mouth.
She kissed him more passionately than shed ever kissed anyone. Her tongue tangled with his, and she noted he didn’t miss a beat. He moaned and kissed her right back, leaning into her as if he wanted more.
She kept her hands pressed firmly to the tabletop. Don’t touch him. Don’t touch him. Alice knew if she reached for Hunter, she could forget having the upper hand, forget ever getting him to see her as his equal. Shed become just like all the other girls who fell at his feet.
