Release Day Launch, Rachel's Review: Wild Aces by Marni Mann

Wild Aces Synopsis
Trapper Montgomery
His darkness drew me in.
A mystery with a past I wanted to solve.
He was cold, like ice, but set me on fire.
A heat I hadn't felt in ages.
But when I saw his face, I burned...
In mourning
Again.

Brea Bradley

She melted from my voice--shuddered from my touch.
But trembled from the memories
That my face brought back.
She wanted more...
Maybe even him.
I wasn't the hand she counted on.
But I was what she was dealt...
A Wild Ace with no way to win.

Rachel's Review~
Whew...what a story.  I can't go into a lot of it, because to really explain will just spoil everything.  The characters are great.  Brea, what a sweetie with a heart of gold and a will of steel.  She has been dealt some shit cards in her life...one of which was identifying her boyfriend in the morgue..holding his cold, cold hand.  Fast forward two years.  It's the anniversary of his death...and if you've lost someone you shouldn't have then you know, that yeah...everything is described before death and after death. Really, Honestly, that is how time is told...and for some reason we ruminate on the date a person dies..Why? I have no idea...it's a significant date, sure.  A date your life changed...most often though, not for the better, so why give it that power over you? Well, Brea had finally figured that out.  She couldn't live for Cody's ghost, or his parents or what might have been.  SO...enter Mr. Mysterioso at a masquerade party...ooh la la.  She falls for his ink, and then his voice, and finally his lips. But he had to run...she still doesn't know who he is, aside from the first name of Trapper, what he does, or even what he looks like.  Yet she can't get him out of her head.
Trapper, Oh my goodness, that poor man was abused something awful as a child. In and out of foster care, being beaten, starved, ignored, and always tossed out...until he's 12 and someone adopts him.
Well, now that he's an adult, there is tons of talk about his "compound" and the "imports". Just one of the 2 mysteries that's floating around this story.  I can't talk about the first...when Brea sees Trapper for the first time...OMG. and even the second, I can't say much about.  Just know that their relationship, while fast moving, is smoking.
Frankie, Brea's boss and bestie is a hoot and a half.  I love her.
The writing is super...I started this book yesterday, read it all afternoon until I HAD to get dinner around, laundry folded...all the crap that takes us away from the one thing we NEED to do..and that's finish a story.  I didn't want to let Trapper and Brea go...I didn't want to give up on the big mysteries...but, life calls...so today...I get up extra early so I get some reading time in BEFORE I have to do the "mom" and "wife" thing...and YES!  I'm so glad I did.  What a fabulous story...loved the way the mysteries fell. One I had figured out, basically, but the other one?  OH WOW, I had no clue...I was so wrapped up in reading those wonderfully written words that I didn't even want to stop and take a guess.
LOVED this story!  Can't wait to read more my Marni Mann.
